Kenai Peninsula & Turnagain Arm

Detailed Alaska Hiking Maps, Narratives, Trail Plans and Photographs.

Very few people are as serious as Thoreau is about his hiking. Most people consider it only a diversion from the every day working world, through which they can clean the spirit or boost the morale. And so not every one has the inclination, or time or energy to spend the long hours that Thoreau spent wandering in the countryside around Concord or climbing Mont Katahdin. Different strokes for different folks, as the saying goes.

Like Thoreau, I take my hiking very seriously. Like him, I leave everything behind me when I go out on a hikeÑespecially a long hike. But except for his climb up Katahdin, Thoreau did little climbing or scrambling. It's difficult to go anywhere in the Chugach without at least some climbing and scrambling. The hikes I take usually include a substantial amount of both. H.D. and myself simply have different ideas of what's fun when we step into the great outdoors. But then all of us do. Though hiking is fun, there are limits - both physical and mental - to everything.
